What We Believe...
The Dalles First Christian Church is an independent governed
congregation with elder oversight. We have strong ties to
the heritage of the Restoration Movement. We follow the
Lord's plea for unity. We support all believers who accept
Jesus as Lord of their lives. We don't consider ourselves
the only Christians, but "Christians only". We look to the
Bible as the inerrant Word of God. We follow the New
Testament in matters of faith and practice. We observe
communion on a weekly basis and follow the Biblical pattern
of conversion. Church members have exhibited their faith in
Christ by belief, repentance, public confession of faith,
baptism (immersion), and a continual faithful obedience to
Biblical standards of living. We stand firm on the essential
doctrines of the faith, but observe freedom in the
non-essential areas of Christian life and belief.
First Christian Church
The present day First Christian Church congregation in The
Dalles was established in 1892 by John W. Jenkins. There
were 24 charter members. According to a notice in the local
newspaper The Chronicle, the actual legal organizing of the
group was done by J. T. Eshelman. The organizational meeting
was held in the Court Room of the Old Court House. The
emerging church borrowed facilities from several
organizations in town while getting under way. The group was
able to build promptly and their building was dedicated to
the service of the Lord on September 2nd, 1893 by William F.
Cowden. A. D. Skaggs was the minister from 1896 to 1897
followed by Gentry Rushing in 1899.
